Higher Education System in Singapore

Higher education in the country starts after completion of higher secondary education after twelve years of schooling.Higher education starts with Junior colleges/Pre-University done in Institutes/Polytechnic Institutes which provides education up to 2-3 years.After completing the pre-university education, students can get enrolled in a university for undergraduates courses and later in master’s course.For international students, Singapore has a separate Council of Private Education under the Ministry of Education.The council takes care of the institutions enrolling students from abroad.

National University of Singapore (NUS)
According to the QS World University Rankings for the year 2014-15,  the National University of Singapore (NUS) was ranked25 top ranking university in the world and highest-ranking universities in Asis for the  study of law , mechanical engineering, computer science, material sciences, accounting ,communication, modern languages and statistics.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
Nanyang Technological University (NTU), is ranked 13th in the world.The university is acclaimed for its engineering courses, and is among the top 10 institutes in the world for engineering and technology.In 2013 Nanyang University started Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine for medical courses in collaboration with the Imperial College London, UK.
Singapore Management University (SMU)
Singapore Management University is also well known institution for courses in accounting, finance, computer science, economics, law and statistics.

Education System in Singapore

  • Certificate Courses Under Institutes of Technical Education
It is a national authority in offering technical full time or part time educational courses in the fields of applied sciences, business, design and media, electronics and information communications technology, engineering and hospitality
  • Polytechnic Courses Offered by Institutions Such as Offered by Nanyang Polytechnic 
Work related training leading to jobs after short courses.These courses are leading to skill generation and are available at diploma and degree levels.
  • Specialist Courses
These are specialist degree courses at diploma and degree level.Institutions like the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) are offering these courses in arts courses.These institutions are self-financed institutions and not regulated by the Singapore Ministry of Education.
  • Bachelor's Degree / Undergraduate Courses (BS/BA)
These courses known as bachelor’s courses are about three to four years full time courses. Students can undertake Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Science (Business Analytics).Students have to take up specialization (major) within that field and complete study of some subjects to be eligible for degree.
Some bachelor courses offer students the opportunity to take up some subjects within the same field for specific hours called a ‘minor’ course.
Eligibility Criteria to Apply to Universities in Singapore for Bachelor’s Program
  • SAT is required for Nanyang Technical University & Singapore Management University. National University of Singapore doesn’t require SAT.
  • Percentage above 85% at higher secondary school level.
  • IELTS score to prove proficiency in English, Singapore has very high standards of  language proficiency and universities do not accept students without good English.It’s important to have excellent language skills to study  in Singapore.
Admission Process
  • Students can directly apply to their selected university/institute by downloading the admission form from their website and after duly filling it, send it(online/offline) to the respective institute along with transcripts/ copies of their testimonials of earlier education.
  • IELTS score card to prove proficiency in English.
  • When the university/institute selects the student for the specified course a letter of acceptance from the institution will be sent.

  • Master's Degree / Post Graduate Courses
Students can opt for one or two years full time masters program that involves more specialized focus on one area of study.After completing two years course they can extend it to Ph.D course by undertaking research work for three years more.
Eligibility
Each university follows different eligibility criteria.
  • Nanyang Technical University, and National University of Singapore require two years of work experience.
  • GMAT score.
  • 85% and above score in bachelor’s program.
