Higher Education System in Canada

  • The higher education in Canada begins after completing class XII known as post secondary that is college/university consists of technical and professional education ranging from certificates, diplomas, university transfer, academic and applied degrees or post-graduate diplomas.Canadian higher education system has semester system, one semester is betweenSeptember-December and the second semester is between January-April, with some summer programs between June to August.
  • Most institutions also offer spring and summer sessions, and a few have trimester system (an academic year is divided into four sessions, consisting of three months each).
  • Most degree programs are on- campus full-time study programs, many institutions offer part-time study through day and evening courses.Many programs have work-study system in which the student can have academic studies with full-time, off campus employment.
  • Some universities like Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec have set up open universities.These open universities provide easy access to the students and give them liberty to pursue part time study and the vast majority of  their students of  age of24 and study part-time.

Higher Education System Consists of

Diploma (1- 2 Years of study)
  • Many universities and university colleges offer job oriented diploma and certificate program.This requires one or two years of study.
An Undergraduate Degree / Bachelors Degree (3- 4 Years)
  • Bachelor's degrees require three or four years of college/university study where the students are required to attend certain hours of college lectures/practicals etc  each semester.
  • Those pursuing honors bachelor's degree have to opt for a  major subject, and, in some cases,  do an additional year of study.
  • For programs in law, medicine, education, and social work, the students have to do an internship, in some case as well as additional years of formal study.


  • Completion of a secondary-school program (XII) or the two-year CÉGEP program in the case of Quebec.
  • Most universities also have special entrance requirements.
  • Proficiency in English valid score of IELTS.
Master’s Degree (1- 2 Years)
  • A master's degree in Canada can be of one year to two years course.Student must have completed bachelor’s degree.
Ph.D/Doctoral (3- 4 Years)
  • Ph.D program is undertaken after completion of Masters degree program.
  • This study program requires minimum of three years of study and research.This is a research oriented study that leads to award of Ph.D/doctoral degree The students have to undertake study in a particular field and at the end of the term submit a thesis/dissertation on the study bringing out some new discovery that they have made in that field of study.

Admission Criteria

  • Admission process for undergraduate and master’s degree study is different for different courses but the mandatory requirement of eligibility of secondary school or a two-year CÉGEP(‘General and Vocational College’ program) is the same for all courses.
  • Some programs require the passing of Standardized Aptitude Tests for admission.
  • Proof of proficiency in either English or French is required for all programs.
  • Admission requirements students above 21 years are made flexible.
